Abstract
When Melanie Akande, daughter of Inspector Wexford's Nigerian-born physician, goes missing, the family brace themselves for a case of abduction-- maybe murder. Melanie had an appointment to see Annette Bystock the day she disappeared, and Annette is found strangled to death in her apartment. During the hunt for Annette's killers, the body of a young black girl is found buried in the Sussex countryside. Wexford must battle through the prejudices of color, age and social class to discover the shocking truth.
