Abstract
The 2010 tour by the Berliner Philharmoniker and their Artistic Director Sir Simon Rattle concluded in Singapore, their very first visit there. They presented Mahler's unique and breathtaking First Symphony, which once briefly enjoyed the title 'Titan' in homage to the Romantic novelist Jean Paul. They also performed Rachmaninov's late Symphonic Dances, highly evocative pieces that originally bore the titles 'Noon', 'Twilight', and 'Midnight', and which were conceived as ballet numbers. In this concert, the Berliner Philharmoniker beautifully capture Mahler's love of nature and Rachmaninov's nostalgic memories of the old Russia he had left behind.
