Abstract
Hassan, an orphan, made a living as a boat boy. His love for music and the violin saw him through his difficult childhood, coupled with the love of Ani, his childhood sweetheart, and the friendship of Mansor, Ani's brother. Realizing that he had to make something of himself, he left the village together with Ani for Singapore. Once there, they married, and Hassan's musical talent landed him recording deals. Thus he made good his promise to provide for Ani financially. However, tragedy struck in the midst - Ani died in childbirth, leaving Hassan alone to raise Sazali. To ensure that his son will not go through the miserable life he had as a child, Hassan provided for his every need, to the point of overindulgence. Hence Sazali grew up spoilt, and eventually turned to a life of crime.
