He was Member of the Municipal Commission of Malacca (1912-1922); Unofficial Member of the Legislative Council (1923) and the Executive Council (1933-1935) of the Straits Settlements; and the first President of the Malayan Chinese Association (1949-1958). He appointed a Justice of the Peace for Malacca (Aug 1912); and later awarded the title Commander of the British Empire (1933). In 1958, he received the title 'Tun' by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
