This is a facade of Raffles Institution (RI) facing Beach Road. Singapore Institution, the oldest school in Singapore, was founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles who laid the foundation stone on 5 June 1823. The school was completed in 1837. Raffles Girls' School began in RI on 1 March 1844, and was separated in 1879. In 1903, Singapore Institution was renamed "Raffles Institution" after it was taken over by colonial government. RI was relocated twice, first to Grange Road in 1972 and later to Bishan in 1990. The old premises bounded by North Bridge Road, Bras Basah Road, Beach Road and Stamford Road, was demolished to make way for Raffles City Shopping Centre which was completed in 1986.
