This is a close-up of Mr. Tan Jiak Kim (陈若锦), the eldest son of Mr. Tan Beng Swee (陈明水, 1828-1884). He was a wealthy Baba merchant and philanthropist; elected Member of Municipal Commission (1888-1893, 1895-1897); Unofficial Member of Straits Settlements Legislative Council (1890-1893, 1903-1915); Justice of Peace for Singapore (1891-1917); and founding President (1900-1904) and Committee Member of Straits Chinese British Association (1904-1915). His grandfather, Mr. Tan Kim Seng (陈金声, 1805-1864), was a prominent Hokkien merchant from Malacca and founder of Kim Seng & Company, a trading house at Boat Quay. Title devised by Library staff.
