This is a half-length portrait of Mr. Othman Wok with Miss Lily Othman, his third child with his first wife (Che Dah), who was the driving force behind her father's biography. Mr. Othman joined Utusan Melayu as a reporter in 1946, and was promoted to Chief Reporter (1951) and News Editor (1955-1961) of Utusan Melayu in Singapore, and Deputy Editor (1961-1963) of Utusan Melayu in Kuala Lumpur. He was Secretary of the Singapore Printing Employees' Union (1951-1954); Chairman of the Singapore National Union of Journalists (Feb-Aug 1961); Minister for Social Affairs (1963-1977) and Culture (Sep 1965-Apr 1968); Minister without Portfolio (1977-1981); President of the Singapore Olympic and Sports Council (Apr 1966-Sep 1970); Chairman of the National Sports Promotion Board (1970-1973); Ambassador to Indonesia (Jun 1977-1980); Member of Central Executive Committee of the People's Action Party (PAP, 1963-1979) and the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board (1981-1993); and PAP Member of Parliament for Pasir Panjang (Sep 1963-1977).
