This is an elevated view of the Bishan Depot, where regular maintenance and repair, washing, cleaning and stabling of trains are carried out. It sits on a 120,000 square meter elevated concrete deck built on top of swampy land that is the flood plain for the Kallang River. MRT Corporation, a statutory board incorporated on 14 October 1983, is charged with the task of building the Mass Rapid Transit or MRT system. Singapore MRT Limited, a company incorporated on 6 August 1987, operates and maintains the Mass Rapid Transit or MRT system. The first section of the MRT system, from Yio Chu Kang to Toa Payoh, was opened for public service on 7 November 1987. The MRT system was officially declared open by Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, on 12 March 1988. Title devised by Library staff.
