This is a close-up portrait of Professor Wang Gungwu, an internationally renowned historian of Chinese history. He is Professor of History at the University of Malaya (1963-1968) and the Australian National University (1968-1986); Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hong Kong (1986-1995); Chairman of Institute of East Asian Political Economy (1996-1997); Distinguished Professorial Fellow, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (1996-2002); Director, East Asian Institute (1997-2007); Chairman of Advisory Panel for Chinese Library Services (1999-2002); and University Professor of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at National University of Singapore (NUS) (since 2007). He received numerous awards including the Commander of the British Empire in 1988, NUS Outstanding Service Award in 2005; Public Service Star in 2008; and Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Cambridge University (2008-2009).
