Mr. Gan Eng Seng, a Chinese philanthropist, founded Anglo-Chinese Free School in 1885 in some shophouses at Telok Ayer Street. The new school building at 106, Telok Ayer Street was declared open by Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, Governor of the Straits Settlements, on 4 April 1893. The school was renamed "Gan Eng Seng School" after its founder in 1923. It was closed in 1941 during the Japanese Occupation, and reopened in 1946. In May 1947, the school was operating in the former Japanese School building at Waterloo Street. In 1951, it was relocated to Anson Road and began as a secondary school. It was declared open by Sir Franklin Gimson, Governor of Singapore, on 15 May 1951. The school was relocated to Raeburn Park in June 1986, and became a co-educational school with the first intake of girls into Secondary One in January 1987. The new premises was declared open by Mr. Ch'ng Jit Koon, Minister of State for Community Development, on 12 July 1989. In January 1993, the school was renamed "Gan Eng Seng School". The school moved to 1, Henderson Road in December 2000. Past principals include Mr. P.F.
