This is a half-length portrait of Dato Dr. Aw Cheng Chye (胡清才), Deputy President of British Red Cross Society, Singapore Branch (1959-1964) and later Deputy President of Singapore Red Cross Society (1964-1971). He was Chairman of Haw Par Brothers Limited; Managing Director of Eng Aun Tong; Executive Director of Sin Poh (Star News) Amalgamated Limited and Chung Khiaw Bank Limited; Vice-President of Singapore Olympic Sports Council, St. John Ambulance Association (Chinese District), Malayan Chinese Football Association and Nanyang Khek Community Guild (1960-1966); President of Singapore Amateur Boxing Association (1953-1957), Singapore Chinese Football Association (1954-1955) and Singapore Boys' Scouts Association (North West District); Patron of Jalan Besar Citizens' Consultative Committee (1968); and Director (1955) and Deputy Chairman of Public Life Assurance Company Limited (1967-1969). He was awarded the Public service Star (BBM) in 1964. His uncle, Mr. Aw Boon Haw (胡文虎), was the man behind Haw Par Villa and Tiger Balm Medicated Ointment, and the first President of Nanyang Khek Community Guild (1929-1955).
