This 1982 photograph depicts Spring Street, from Banda Street, on what looks like a busy day. Hawker stalls line both sides of the streets, manned by hawkers. People can also be seen walking along the street and an older woman dressed in a samfu is also strolling about. The street is lined on both sides by 2 storey shophouses and overhead power cables can be seen criss-crossing the buildings. Tall buildings can bee seen in the distance against the skyline. A spring used to be located where Spring Street is, thus giving rise to the name. Water from the spring would flow into a well, and once drawn, it was loaded onto bullock carts and transported to different areas in Singapore. Today Spring Street is a short one-way road which connects the junction of South Bridge Road and Neil Road to Banda Street and is used during the Chinese New Year festive season as part of the Chinatown night bazaar.
