This is a pre-1914 photograph from E. A. Brown's collection. It shows a large number of sampans in the waters. The picture was taken onshore at Beach Road near Clyde Terrace Market. Sugar cane, fruits and vegetables are being unloaded by the boatmen. A large pile of chipped granite used for laying road surfaces is seen behind the sampans, while the masts of some Bugis schooners are partially seen in the background. No date of creation provided.
