He was also Chairman of Shell Group of Companies in Malaysia (Jun 1970-Dec 1976); Minister for Trade and Industry (1985), Health (May 1985-Dec 1986), Finance (May 1985-Nov 2001) and National Development (Sep 1992-Jan 1994); People's Action Party Member of Parliament for Kreta Ayer (1985-1997) and Kreta Ayer-Tanglin GRC (1997-2001); Vice-President of Anglo-Chinese School Old Boys' Association (1978); Chancellor of Singapore Management University (July 2002-to date); Director (Dec 1970-1975) and later Managing Director (1983-Dec 1984) of the Monetary Authority of Singapore; Director (Aug 1981-to date) and later Managing Director (1983-Dec 1984) of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation or GIC; Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and Board of Commissioners of Currency (Jan 1985-Dec 1997); and Chairman of CapitaLand Limited (Apr 2004) and GIC Real Estate Private Limited (2002-to date).
