This is an elevated view of Merdeka Bridge across Kallang River. In the far right background is the oval-shaped National Stadium. The bridge was constructed under the supervision of Public Works Department in 1955. A pair of stone lions with their heads turned to the right to face oncoming traffic, were placed at each end of the bridge. The bridge and the adjoining Nicoll Highway were declared open by Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock, on 17 August 1956. In 1966, the bridge was widened with three additional lanes. The lions were relocated to Stadium Walk, near the entrance of Kallang Park. Subsequently, the lions were installed at the base of the 17-storey observation tower of SAFTI Military Institute at Upper Jurong Road, on 22 July 1995. Title devised by Library staff.
