This is a half-length portrait of Mr. Haji Muhammad Ariff bin Ahmad, a prominent Malay community leader, writer and an expert in Malay language, literature and culture. He also goes by the pseudonym, Mas. He is one of the founders and Chairman of the Angkatan Sasterawan or ASAS '50 (Malay Literary Movement of the 50s); Secretary (1953-1955), Editor (1953-1954, 1957-1960, 1965-1966) and later, Vice-President (1967-1968) of Kesatuan Guru-Guru Melayu Singapura (Singapore Malay Teachers' Union); Lecturer at the Institute of Education (1975); and Chairman of Al-Muttaqin Mosque Building Committee (1980). He is conferred the Public Service Star by the Government of Singapore in 2007. Title devised by Library staff.
