A painting by artist, Mr. Percy Carpenter (b.1820-d.1895) showing the Singapore landscape at sunrise from Mount Wallich in 1856. On the right is the Chinese settlement around Telok Ayer Bay. The octagonal structure seen jutting out into the bay is Telok Ayer Market, built in 1838. In the centre background is Government Hill (later Fort Canning Hill). Carpenter, whose parents and elder brother were artists, studied painting in the British Royal Academy.
