This is a head-and-shoulder portrait of Mr. Sinnathamby Rajaratnam, well known as S. Rajaratnam, Member of People's Action Party Central Executive Committee from 1959 to 1992. He was a student of Raffles Institution; journalist with the Malayan Tribune (1948-1950) and The Straits Times (1954-1959); Associate Editor of the Singapore Standard (1950-1954); Minister for Culture (Jun 1959-Aug 1965), Foreign Affairs (Aug 1965-Jun 1980) and Labour (1968-1971); Second Deputy Prime Minister (Foreign Affairs) (1980-1985) and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office (1985-1988); PAP Member of Parliament for Kampong Glam (1959-1984); and Distinguished Senior Fellow at Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Nov 1988-Oct 1997). He was conferred the Order of Temasek (First Class) in 1990 and the ASEAN Heads of Government Citation Award in 1997. He died of heart failure on 22 February 2006. Title devised by Library staff.
