He was a reporter for the Utusan Melayu (1964); Chairman of the Working Committee for the National Language Week (1964); Political Secretary for Culture (Feb 1964-1968); Parliamentary Secretary for Education (Aug 1970-May 1972); President of the Singapore Amateur Sepaktakraw Association (1970); and People's Action Party Member of Parliament for Aljunied (May 1968-1972).
