This is a half-length portrait of Dr. Lien Ying Chow (连瀛洲), a prominent Teochew banker, businessman, philanthropist, and community leader, holding a pen in his right hand. He was Municipal Councillor (1947); President of Ngee Ann Kongsi; founding Board Member of Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association or SATA (1948); one of the founding Directors (1947), founding Vice-Chairman (1947-1969), Managing Director (1947-1995), and later Chairman (1969-1995) of Overseas Union Bank; Board Member of Singapore Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan (1951); President of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce (1941-1946); Chairman of the Board of Governors for Ngee Ann College (May 1962); founding Chairman of Singapore Press Holdings and the National University of Singapore Council (1980-1992); High Commissioner to Malaysia (Jul 1966-Sep 1969); Chairman of the Preservation of Monuments Board (1974); and Pro-Chancellor of NUS (1992-2004). He was conferred the Meritorious Service Medal by the Government of Singapore in the 1963 National Day Awards. Title devised by Library staff.
