This is a head-and-shoulder portrait of Mr. Goh Chok Tong (吴作栋), the second Prime Minister of Singapore from 28 November 1990 to 12 August 2004; succeeding Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, who served from 1959. He joined the Administrative Service in 1964 and served in the Economic Planning Unit. He joined Neptune Oriental Lines in 1969 as a Manager and later became its Managing Director (1973-Sep 1977). He was a former student at Pasir Panjang Primary School and Raffles Institution (1955-1960); Senior Minister of State for Finance (Sep 1977-Mar 1979); Minister for Trade and Industry (Mar 1979-May 1981), Health (Jan 1981-May 1982) and Defence (Jun 1982-1990); Second Minister for Defence (Jun 1981-May 1982) and Health (Jun 1982-Dec 1984); First Deputy Prime Minister (Jan 1985-Nov 1990) and later Senior Minister of Singapore (Aug 2004-to date); Director (1977-1981) and later Chairman of the Singapore Labour Foundation (Jan 1982-May 1985); Chairman of the Board of Director of the NTUC Income, Board of Trustees of the NTUC Fairprice Co-operative (1983), Board of Trustees of the SILO Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (Aug 2004-2009); Secretary General of the People's Action Party (1992-2004); and PAP Member of Parliament for Marine Parade (Dec 1976-1988), and Marine Parade GRC (1989-2009).
