This is a head-and-shoulders portrait of Mr. Chan Kai Yau, Deputy Director of Schools (1973-1975) and later Director of Education at the Ministry of Education from 1975 to 1982. He was a teacher at the Beatty Secondary School (1955-1960); Lecturer at the Teachers' Training College (1961-1963); Specialist Inspector for Mathematics (1964); Assistant Director of Education (1968-1969); Vice-Principal of the Teachers' Training College (1970-1971); Member of the Metrication Board (1971); Assistant Director of the Technical Education Department (1971); Chief Inspector of Schools (1972-1973); Member of the Singapore Sports Council (1973); President of the Singapore Teachers Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society Limited (1982); Executive Director of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (1985-1987); and Chairman of the Singapore Red Cross Society (1988).
