The Malay language was the mother tongue of the country of the Malays, generally known by the name of Malacca, the chief language of the islands of the East Indies and the lingua franca of the eastern world. Communication in the language between the British and the Malays, epecially with the establishment of Pulo Pinang, thus became important. This grammar and dictionary of the Malay language was offered to the public to facilitate it.
