Information About

In 1816, William Pitt Amherst, Baron Amherst, was sent as ambassador extraordinary to China, with Henry Ellis as the third commissioner on Amherst's embassy. This journal by Ellis is a narrative of the journey and transactions of the embassy, detailing the difficulties experienced by British travellers in the Far East, general observations on Chinese life and character, and a shipwreck in the Straits of Gaspar on the return voyage. Also includes a report of a visit to Saint Helena in July 1817 and of an interview with Napoleon Bonaparte.
