The author lived for several years on various islands of the Indian Archipelago as it was then known and acquired first-hand knowledge of its cultures, geography, ethnology, agriculture, trade and other economic and social practices. He records his experiences in this work comprising three volumes. The second volume provides details on the languages and literatures, religions and history of the various peoples and countries in the Archipelago.
