This is a guide to the main sources of law in Singapore and Malaysia providing an 'overview of the main principles' governing the applicable law. Specifically, it indicates to what extent Singapore law today is to be found in the laws of England, Malaysia, India and other countries. It looks at the extent of the reception of foreign laws in these two jurisdictions, and also at the operation of the doctrine of precedent, (whereby the courts of one country may be bound by decisions of courts that are or were in the past a part of that country.) It involves tracing the history of the court systems in the two jurisdictions, with a view to seeing their past connections and inter-relationships.
