The Raja's crown : a Singapore folktale

Information About

This tale tells the story of the founding of Singapore by Sang Nila Utama, the Raja of Palembang. In his quest to find a new place to build a new city, Sang Nila Utama sailed across the sea until he came across an island with beautiful white beaches. However, before he could reach the island, his fleet of ships encountered a terrible storm. The storm only subsided after the Raja threw his crown into the water. Upon reaching the island of Temasek, the Raja saw an animal that was identified as a lion. He then renamed the island Singapura, or the Lion City.
