The author lived for several years on various islands of the Indian Archipelago as it was then known and acquired first-hand knowledge of its cultures, geography, ethnology, agriculture, trade and other economic and social practices. He records his experiences in this work comprising three volumes. The third volume provides details on politics and government, public revenue and laws as well as domestic and international trade of the Archipelago.
