Athipathi International Theatre Ltd (Athipathi), holds the record for the longest Tamil play in Singapore – Kavasam -- lasting 28hrs 20mins. It also inaugurated a Tamil theatre festival called Thisaivegam in 2013, which has become the longest-running Tamil drama festival in Singapore. Athipathi, a non-profit organisation, was established in 2013 with the aim of producing high quality Tamil plays and holding a systematic training programme for novices interested in theatre. The company is led by its founder, Pugalenthii. It has mounted more than 50 productions, many of which were original plays. It strives to modernise traditional Tamil theatre and appeal to the current generation. It also brings Tamil theatre to the heartlands through Community Clubs in partnership with the Indian Activity Executive Committees.
Athipathi’s special focus is on school students and young adults who wish to train and perform in Tamil theatre. The company states that over 300 new actors, many new playwrights, and more than a dozen first-time directors had their breakthrough with Athipathi through its project Winmeengal, which is supported by the Tamil Language Council. Theatre training is conducted free of charge on Sundays as a community service.
