Chitra Rajaram (b. 1965) has the honour of being the first female editor of Tamil Murasu. She has also played leadership roles in radio and television media, in Malay, English and Tamil language streams. In addition, she has contributed to the field of media education.
Chitra holds bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees in business administration. She worked as a journalist at the New Paper, an English daily, from 1987 to 1991 during its early years. Later, she joined the Business Times and gained experience as a senior political correspondent. She then moved to Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where she was a Lecturer and head of the Media and News Department from 1991 to 1996.
Chitra joined the Tamil Murasu newspaper as an associate editor in 1996. During her tenure as editor (1998-2005), she reorganised the magazine's approach and operations to better connect with a younger, contemporary audience. The online edition of Tamil Murasu was launched during this time.
In 2002, she launched the ‘Most Inspiring Tamil Teacher Award' to recognise outstanding Tamil teachers. In 2003, to mark the centenary of G Sarangapani, the founder of Tamil Murasu, she established the ‘Kosa Education Foundation’ to help underprivileged students and led the fundraising effort, which raised $1.1 million.
After leaving Tamil Murasu, Chitra worked as the Regional Managing Director and Managing Director of Golin, an international public relations firm, for three years (2005-2008). She then joined Mediacorp and served as the News Director from 2008 to 2011. She was responsible for all editorial content across radio, television, print, and digital platforms at Channel News Asia, Radio 93.8 Live, and TODAY newspaper. All the news outlets were merged to form the News Hub, which she headed. Subsequently, Chitra served as Senior Vice President and Head of Community at Mediacorp from 2011 to 2018. During that time, as head of the Indian and Malay divisions, she was responsible for Tamil and Malay television and radio services, facilitating their entry into the digital world.
Subsequently, she joined Republic Polytechnic as Principal Lecturer in 2020 and has been serving as its Director of Corporate Communications since 2023. Chitra is a member of several boards and councils, including the Singapore Indian Development Association’s Executive Council, National Integration Council, and National Parks Board.
In recognition of her contributions, the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin awarded her the Global Indian Achiever Award in 2008, and the Singapore Woman’s Weekly magazine awarded her the title ‘Great Woman of Our Time, Media and Arts Category’ in 2009.
