Kadayanallur Street

Encyclopedia of Singapore Tamils

Centre for Singapore Tamil Culture

Kadayanallur Street commemorates the Tamil Muslims who migrated to Singapore from Kadayanallur, a town in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, India. By 1920, the Tanjong Pagar area had a substantial Tamil Muslim settlement from Kadayanallur. They were mostly shopkeepers, retailers and office workers.

Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League has a special reputation among Singapore Tamils as the organisation that established the Umar Pulavar Tamil School. In 1952, the government named one of Singapore's Central Business District streets Kadayanallur Street in recognition of the services rendered by the Tamil Muslim community for the development of Tamil education. Kadayanallur Street is located near the famous Maxwell Food Centre.
