Alfian bin Sa'at

Alfian bin Sa’at (l. 18 Julai 1977, Singapura –), yang lebih dikenali sebagai Alfian Sa’at, ialah seorang penulis drama, penyair dan penulis dwibahasa (Bahasa Inggeris dan Melayu) yang terkenal di Singapura dan Malaysia. Dikenali melalui karya-karyanya yang berani meneroka tema perkauman, seksualiti dan politik, Alfian telah tiga kali memenangi anugerah Skrip Asli Terbaik di The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards, serta menerima Anugerah Artis Muda untuk Sastera pada tahun 2001. Beliau kini merupakan penulis drama residen di syarikat teater terkemuka, Wild Rice.

Kehidupan Awal dan Pendidikan
Dilahirkan sebagai anak sulung daripada tiga beradik di Singapura kepada seorang sarjan polis dan seorang pekerja kilang yang kemudian menjadi suri rumah, Alfian mendapat pendidikan di Sekolah Rendah Tampines, Institusi Raffles dan Maktab Rendah Raffles.¹ Di ketiga-tiga institusi tersebut, beliau menamatkan pengajian sebagai pelajar Melayu terbaik peringkat kebangsaan, sekali gus memenangi biasiswa Mendaki dan Hadiah Buku Perdana Menteri sebanyak tiga kali.² Alfian menyumbang kejayaan akademiknya kepada ibunya yang telah meninggal dunia, Rohani Jaffar, yang mendorongnya untuk bergaul dengan rakan bukan Melayu bagi memperbaiki kemahirannya dalam bahasa Inggeris.³

Alfian mula menulis secara kreatif semasa di sekolah rendah setelah ibunya membawa pulang sebuah mesin taip dari tempat kerja. Beliau akan menghasilkan karangan sepanjang 10 muka surat bertemakan seram atau fantasi, sedangkan keperluan tugasan hanyalah satu muka surat.⁴ Semasa di sekolah menengah dan maktab rendah, Alfian menjadi pengerusi persatuan drama, di mana beliau mula berlakon, menulis puisi dan skrip drama, serta menyumbang dalam antologi sastera.⁵

Pada usia 15 dan 17 tahun, beliau terpilih untuk menyertai Creative Arts Programme yang dikendalikan oleh Gifted Education Branch dan Universiti Nasional Singapura, di mana beliau dibimbing oleh penulis drama residen The Necessary Stage, Haresh Sharma. Salah satu drama awal Alfian, Black Boards, White Walls, kemudiannya dipentaskan oleh The Necessary Stage. Semasa di Maktab Rendah Raffles, beliau dianugerahkan Kripalani Award for Outstanding Contribution to Creative Arts.⁶

Pada tahun 1996, Alfian mendaftarkan diri untuk melanjutkan pengajian di Fakulti Perubatan, Universiti Nasional Singapura (NUS), tetapi tidak meneruskannya pada tahun akhir pengajian untuk menumpukan sepenuhnya kepada penulisan dan mengelakkan diri daripada memenuhi perjanjian ikatan perkhidmatan enam tahun dalam latihan perubatan.⁷

Kerjaya Kesusasteraan
Pada tahun 1998, Alfian menerbitkan kumpulan puisi sulungnya, One Fierce Hour, yang menampilkan puisi “Singapore You Are Not My Country”. Puisi tersebut dengan lantang menyenaraikan apa yang beliau anggap sebagai kekurangan negara serta mencari naratif sejarah dan permulaan alternatif – dengan menyeru nama Sang Nila Utama berbanding Stamford Raffles.⁸ Buku cerpen sulungnya, Corridor: 12 Short Stories, memenangi Anugerah Kepujian, Hadiah Sastera Singapura 1998.⁹

Kumpulan puisi berikutnya, A History of Amnesia (2001), memperlihatkan Alfian secara sengaja memilih gaya penulisan yang lebih lembut dan koheren untuk meneroka kelompongan dalam sejarah rasmi Singapura.¹⁰ A History of Amnesia telah disenarai pendek dalam senarai fiksyen penting Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize 2001,¹¹ dan pada tahun yang sama Alfian dianugerahkan Anugerah Pena Emas untuk Puisi dalam bahasa Inggeris.¹²

Kerjaya Teater
Trilogi drama Alfian, Asian Boys – Dreamplay, Landmarks dan Happy Endings – bermula pada tahun 2000 dan berakhir pada 2007. Dalam trilogi ini, Alfian beralih daripada gaya sengaja “camp” kepada yang benar-benar bersifat politik dengan menjejaki sejarah gay di Singapura.¹³ Landmarks memenangi Skrip Asli Terbaik di Life! Theatre Awards pada tahun 2005.¹⁴ Drama-drama berikutnya, Nadirah dan Kakak Kau Punya Laki, turut memenangkannya anugerah yang sama masing-masing pada 2010 dan 2014.¹⁵

Alfian telah dilantik sebagai penulis residen syarikat teater profesional Wild Rice pada tahun 2004 dan terus memegang jawatan tersebut hingga kini.¹⁶ Beliau menjadi fokus retrospektif syarikat itu pada tahun 2013, Alfian Sa’at – In the Spotlight, yang merangkumi pementasan semula The Optic Trilogy dan Dreamplay: Asian Boys Vol. 1, tayangan perdana Cook a Pot of Curry, serta pelbagai bengkel dan perbincangan berkaitan.¹⁷

Sebagai sebahagian daripada Festival Seni Antarabangsa Singapura 2015, Alfian turut menulis bersama drama Hotel, sebuah pementasan selama lima jam dalam dua bahagian mengenai sejarah alternatif Singapura, yang dipuji oleh The Straits Times sebagai “sebuah drama yang mengisytiharkan kepada dunia – kita sudah tiba”.¹⁸

Sumbangan kepada Kesusasteraan dan Teater Melayu
Walaupun impaknya dalam kesusasteraan dan teater berbahasa Inggeris amat ketara, sumbangannya kepada karya berbahasa Melayu juga sangat mendalam. Kumpulan cerpen beliau, Malay Sketches (2012), meneroka pengalaman orang Melayu di Singapura sebagai “naratif masyarakat peribumi yang terpinggir di seluruh dunia”.¹⁹

Pada usia 21 tahun, Alfian menulis Causeway, salah satu karya awal beliau dalam bahasa Melayu, yang memenangkannya Anugerah Kepujian daripada Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka pada tahun 1998. Drama ini mengkaji hubungan antara rakyat Singapura dan Malaysia, serta meneliti dinamik rumit berkaitan bangsa, jantina dan politik yang terutamanya berlaku dalam rumah tangga Melayu-Muslim.²⁰

Alfian telah membawa beberapa drama berbahasa Melayu beliau ke Malaysia. Pada awal 2000-an, beliau mementaskan Madu II, satu tafsiran feminis semula filem Melayu ikonik Madu Tiga (Three Honeys; 1964) arahan P. Ramlee. Satu lagi karya penting Alfian, Anak Bulan di Kampung Wa’Hassan (The New Moon at the Village of Wa’Hassan), turut dipentaskan di Malaysia. Monodrama ini menampilkan refleksi mendalam mengenai kampung Melayu terakhir yang masih wujud di Singapura dan penghapusannya atas nama pemodenan. Tayangan perdana di Kuala Lumpur diikuti dengan jelajah ke enam bandar luar bandar di Semenanjung Malaysia.²¹ Alfian terus menghasilkan karya yang disemai dengan inti pati pengalaman Melayu Singapura yang unik. Nadirah (2009) meneroka tema keimanan, identiti, dan hubungan antara agama, sebagai respons terhadap ortodoksi agama dan konservatisme budaya mengenai perkahwinan campuran. Karya ini mendapat resonansi mendalam dalam konteks tempatan dan menerima pujian meluas. Ia diiktiraf dengan anugerah Skrip Asli Terbaik di Life! Theatre Awards pada tahun 2010, mengukuhkan lagi reputasi Alfian sebagai penulis teater yang bukan sahaja mencabar norma masyarakat tetapi juga memberikan suara kepada kerumitan identiti Melayu-Muslim di Singapura.²²

Kakak Kau Punya Laki (2013) menyusul selepas itu, sebuah drama intelektual berunsur farce yang mencabar standard masyarakat. Karya ini juga memenangi Skrip Asli Terbaik di Life! Theatre Awards.

Dalam beberapa tahun kebelakangan ini, Alfian telah menterjemahkan beberapa novel berbahasa Melayu karya penulis Melayu tempatan supaya dapat diakses oleh pembaca berbahasa Inggeris. Sementara itu, drama beliau juga telah diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa lain termasuk Jerman dan Sweden, serta telah dibaca dan dipentaskan di bandar-bandar antarabangsa seperti Berlin, London dan Zurich.²³

Konvensyen Gaya
Alfian telah digambarkan sebagai seorang penyair yang “bersungguh-sungguh dan bertenaga” yang menggunakan pengulangan sintaksis dan teknik penyenaraian dalam puisinya.²⁴ Teknik sasteranya sering melibatkan penggunaan bahasa yang mudah yang kreatif untuk menggambarkan imej harian serta tempat tertentu seperti pangsapuri Lembaga Perumahan dan Pembangunan (HDB).²⁵ Puisinya biasanya menampilkan suara subaltern, termasuk bekas tahanan politik Chia Thye Poh dan artis persembahan Josef Ng dalam A History of Amnesia, sebagai usaha untuk merakam mereka  dalam sejarah Singapura menerusi penulisan.²⁶

Pengkritik mencatat bahawa, tidak seperti puisinya, cerpen Alfian kurang bersifat politik dan lebih menumpukan kepada penggambaran kehidupan harian rakyat Singapura secara humanistik, dengan fokus kepada golongan yang terpinggir dalam masyarakat.²⁷ Alfian sendiri menyatakan bahawa beliau ingin mewakili “setiausaha kelas pekerja … orang yang kurang bernasib baik dan tidak fasih” dalam koleksi cerpen sulungnya, Corridor: 12 Short Stories, yang diinspirasikan oleh Raymond Carver.²⁸ Koleksi cerpen keduanya, Malay Sketches, mendapat perhatian kerana usaha untuk melemahkan stereotaip kaum yang negatif dan menarik perhatian kepada implikasi emosi dan politik stereotaip tersebut terhadap individu yang ditandakan sebagai minoriti oleh negara.²⁹

Drama beliau, seperti Cook a Pot of Curry, menaikkan Singlish ke tahap linguistik perantara yang menghubungkan perbezaan sosial.³⁰ Drama sebelumnya, Cooling-off Day, signifikan kerana menggunakan bentuk teater dokumentari untuk secara langsung dan segera menangani pilihan raya umum 2011.³¹ Sebaliknya, The Optic Trilogy, salah satu drama awal Alfian, dipuji kerana penulisan lirik, jenaka halus dan berasaskan metafora mengenai hubungan heteroseksual.³²

Kontroversi
Pada Disember 1999, tiga babak dari sex.violence.blood.gore, sebuah drama yang ditulis Alfian bersama penulis drama Chong Tze Chien, disekat oleh Unit Pelesenan Hiburan Awam kerana kandungannya dianggap provokatif.³³

Pada 2003, Majlis Seni Kebangsaan (NAC) menarik balik pembiayaan bagi jurnal focas: Forum on Contemporary Art & Society tiga hari sebelum keluaran seterusnya dicetak. Salah satu artikel dalam keluaran pertama jurnal itu – mengenai hubungan antara NAC dan penapisan, yang ditulis oleh Alfian – mencetuskan tindak balas daripada NAC. Walau bagaimanapun, NAC menegaskan bahawa keputusan itu semata-mata berdasarkan “penyusunan semula keutamaan pembiayaan”.³⁴

Pada Jun 2007, permohonan Alfian untuk menjadi guru ganti ditolak oleh Kementerian Pendidikan.³⁵ Apabila ditanya di parlimen mengenai perkara itu, Menteri Negara Pendidikan ketika itu, Lui Tuck Yew, enggan melibatkan diri dalam perdebatan, hanya menyatakan bahawa sebilangan kecil pemohon ditolak setiap tahun atas pelbagai sebab.³⁶

Pada Ogos 2007, Alfian disoal siasat pihak polis selepas beliau menghantar e-mel hina kepada ahli akademik undang-undang NUS, Thio Li-ann, yang ketika itu ialah seorang ahli parlimen yang dilantik, kerana beliau percaya Thio telah mendorong sentimen anti-gay dalam parlimen yang sedang meneliti pengkriminalan perbuatan homoseksual di bawah seksyen 377A Kanun Keseksaan. Thio membuat laporan polis tetapi membatalkan hasratnya untuk menyaman beliau selepas Alfian memohon maaf kepadanya melalui e-mel.³⁷
