Nanyang Technological University Tamil Literary Society (NTU TLS) was established in 2010 with the aim of building a value-driven community, nurturing young talents, and serving the Tamil community. For students, it organises several events, including Vaanga Pazhagalam (Let’s Explore Together), a freshman orientation camp for Indian undergraduates, as well as cultural and religious celebrations such as Pongal, the Harvest Festival, and Deepavali, the Festival of Lights. In 2015, NTU TLS and Tanglin Community Club Management Committee jointly organised a Pongal celebration setting a record in the Singapore Book of Records for the Number of Overflowing Pongal Pots, in 15 minutes, with 198 participants. Paarvai (Perspective), a literary event conducted annually since 2011, provides a platform for youth to share their appreciation of literature through short films, debates, podcasts and comic strips.
Another significant event is Uthraa (Elevated), a biennial musical that started in 2012, blending Tamil language and technology in creative ways. Initially attracting around 50 students, the theatre productions’ popularity grew, with the audience reaching 1500 in 2016. Over the years, various interest groups, later known as wings, were created to further develop the talent of Indian students at NTU. These wings include the Band, Dance, Drama, Technology and Writers. The wings organised a cultural night, named ‘Mo-Cha’, in 2017. Both Uthraa and Mo-Chaprovided members with opportunities to explore their passion and skills in acting, scriptwriting, direction, singing, dancing, choreography, IT, lighting, sound, costumes and set design, among other areas.
Ithazhin Oram (Corner of the Lips), NTU TLS’ annual publication, was launched in 2011. It reports on the society’s activities and offers space for creative writings. In 2019, NTU TLS initiated its first Overseas Community Involvement Programme called Project ‘Aram’ (Righteousness) in collaboration with Social Change And Development (SCAD) at Tirunelveli, India. The Aram team consisted of 20 students who helped to refurbish the classrooms for the mentally and physically challenged children under SCADs care. For its special achievements, Project Aram received the CoLab4Good Award Service to Society from NTU for outstanding community service in an overseas country.
