A prominent figure in the local media industry, Sujimy bin Mohamad is known for his work in Malay-language broadcasting for both television and radio. He made his radio debut in 1986 under the guidance of Zakiah Halim and thereafter made the transition to television as a news anchor. He then began fronting the Malay current affairs programme, Tinjauan, under the tutelage of Sujadi and Basir Siswo, who played key roles in the development of Malay-language programming at Mediacorp in the 1990s.1

Ascent to Fame
Sujimy gained prominence began in 1998 when Mediacorp invited him to host the lifestyle morning show, Selamat Pagi Singapura, on Prime 12, a channel that featured both Tamil and Malay programming.2 As the broadcasting corporation began streamlining its Malay-language programming to a dedicated channel, Prime 12 was rebranded as Suria in 2000. By then, Selamat Pagi Singapura, which was hosted by Sujimy and Ainah Embit, had amassed a huge following, and Sujimy became a popular television personality on Suria.3 In that same year, Sujimy won the Best Host and Most Popular Personality awards for Selamat Pagi Singapura at the 3rd Pesta Perdana awards ceremony, a media event celebrating the best in the Malay media industry.4

Documentary Production and Leveraging Social Media
In 2002, Sujimy founded the production house ScreenBox Pte Ltd with his wife and business partner, Haslinda Ali.5 ScreenBox focuses on producing documentaries that explore the depth of human connections, unearthing stories that are relatable to the local Malay/Muslim community, alongside content on global issues. Centred on wayward youths in Singapore, Hanyut was one of these documentaries that resonated with local audiences, clinching the Best Info-Ed Programme award at the 8th Pesta Perdana in 2005. Leveraging its skills and talent in the info-ed space, ScreenBox went on to produce other award-winning documentaries such as Kau Istimewa, about destitutes living in Singapore, and 647km2, which explores Singaporeans with unique hobbies, jobs and lifestyles as well as interesting local places.6 Other notable productions include Million-Makers, The Peddlers of Asia and Centennials Asia.7

In order to diversify ScreenBox’s core business of providing media production services, Sujimy pivoted to online platforms and harnessed the popularity of social media. This grew ScreenBox’s monthly average views to six million across multiple social media platforms.8 Besides helming ScreenBox, Sujimy is also a social media influencer whose vlogs have garnered some three million views. Leveraging his strong social media presence, Sujimy set up KedaiSujimy.com, an e-commerce platform that not only sells products targeting the Malay/Muslim community but also provides opportunities for others to ride on his branding to help them grow their businesses.9

Sharing Success
Enthusiastic about sharing his skills and knowledge with others, Sujimy holds the Online Video and Vlogging Masterclass to equip local businessowners with the know-how to improve their branding and presence on social media platforms.10 Sujimy’s generosity extends beyond contributions in the media industry: he is also active in humanitarian work in the region and beyond, having worked with various nongovernmental organisations to provide aid and assistance to the homeless in Malaysia, orphanages in Indonesia, and to war-torn Yemen.11
