Saleem Hadi, a filmmaker, theatre practitioner, writer and media-arts educator, and D Piriyadarisini, a dancer, singer, actress and teacher, co-founded the Singapore Indian Theatre & Film Explorers (S.I.T.F.E.) with a vision to empower aspiring theatre and film enthusiasts. Established in 2016 as a social enterprise, S.I.T.F.E. was later registered as a non-profit organisation in 2018. It is dedicated to telling stories of identity, culture and society that make an impact on the community. In addition to mounting hybrid productions that fuse theatre and film, S.I.T.F.E holds workshops, talks, networking sessions and screenings. It also caters to aspiring individuals in film and theatre production by providing training sessions, talent showcases, creating portfolios, and fostering lifelong learning.

Among its many productions, Thuyil (Sleep) and Nachukkoppai (The Glass of Poison) are notable for their uncommon subjects and treatment. Thuyil is a bilingual theatre production on sleep-related issues faced by people in Singapore. Nachukkoppai is a theatre film based on Cultural Medallion winner P Krishnan’s 1967 historic Tamil radio play, set against the backdrop of 15th-century Malacca. S.I.T.F.E. also initiated the first and only Indian short film archive of short films done in Singapore. Launched by Singapore’s iconic filmmaker K Rajagopal in 2018, THEINDBOX.SG is a website designed to host all films made in Singapore in any Indian language, including Tamil, Malayalam, Punjabi, Hindi, and Telugu. This ongoing archive project hopes to preserve the identities and voices of Indians in Singapore for future generations.
