AK Theatre (AKT) was founded in 2013 by Anandha Kannan, a leading theatre practitioner and television presenter, as a not-for-profit organisation to promote Tamil language theatre and traditional art forms. AKT strives to empower and enrich all age groups by building on their Tamil language literacy skills through arts programmes. AKT’s special focus is on traditional forms of theatre such as Koothu (a form of street theatre), Karagam (folk dance using pots on heads), Kummi (a form of folk dance) and Villupattu (musical storytelling using a musical bow as the lead instrument). Singapore Tamil audiences are generally unfamiliar with these traditional forms, and AKT has made them popular in the Tamil theatre scene.

In 2016, the AKT Festival was launched to promote storytelling and theatre across national boundaries. Collaborating with theatre enthusiasts worldwide, a special ‘Storython’ was initiated, where storytellers entertained the young audience with non-stop storytelling sessions in Tamil, English, Malay and Mandarin for over four hours. AKT has offered “Anandha Kalvi,” a certificate course in language and the arts, since 2019. It is an internationally accredited art-enrichment program on traditional arts and theatre forms that enables students to come up with their own productions. AK Theatre has been recognised for its contribution to the arts field with the Tamil Chudar Award in 2019, given by MediaCorpthe leading television network in Singapore.
