The formation of the Tamil Language Learning and Promotion Committee (TLLPC) was the outcome of a recommendation by the Tamil Language Curriculum and Pedagogy Review Committee of the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2005. To sustain the Tamil language as a living language in Singapore and to develop an enduring interest in learning and using the language among future generations, it was believed that a tripartite partnership among home, school, and community was necessary. Hence, in 2006, TLLPC was established under the leadership of Minister S Iswaran. This committee’s focus is on promoting the use and learning of the Tamil language among Tamil students, as well as developing their enthusiasm and involvement in Tamil language, literature, and culture.
While the TLLPC secretariat is comprised of senior education officers, the committee members include representatives from major Tamil organisations, the media, and social activists. MOE provides the funds for TLLPC, which organises and supports several projects to promote the language throughout the year. This Encyclopedia of Singapore Tamils, published in 2025, is one such project. Additionally, TLLPC has continued to be a key partner to the Tamil Language Council in organising the Tamil Language Festival to celebrate the annual “Tamil Language Month” in April each year. In 2025, Dinesh Vasu Dash, Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and Minister of State for the Ministry of Manpower, assumed the leadership of TLLPC.
