Agam Theatre Lab, inaugurated on 30th January 2019, states that it was established “to create professional plays with the highest quality”. It intends to stage “entertaining, innovative and relevant theatre experiences that would stimulate and inspire the Tamil community to think critically about the world around them, and to engage in constructive and creative self-expression.” Agam was founded by Subramanian Ganesh, a theatre maker, in collaboration with other enthusiasts. To achieve its ends, Agam has brought together veterans of intercultural theatre as well as creative and vibrant young theatre enthusiasts. Agam is eager to enable its practitioners to experiment with new ideas and approaches in a nurturing and supportive environment. Some of its significant Tamil productions include Othello, Animal Farm and the biographical Re Somma. In 2021, its production Duryodhanan, based on a leading character in Mahabharatha, the great Indian epic, became the first augmented reality theatre production of Singapore Tamil theatre, showcasing Agam’s commitment to innovation and experimentation.

A notable achievement of Agam is its annual Tamil Theatre Forum, titled “Nadagavaathi” in Tamil, which means “Theatre Practitioner”, since 2019. This forum offers a platform to explore various aspects of Tamil theatre practice and brings together members from other theatre groups.  Agam also provides an intensive residency for some participants from the start to the end of production. Agam has been recognised by the Singapore government as an Institution of Public Character since 2022. It is also noteworthy that  Twin Murder in the Green Mansion, a co-production with Agam Theatre Lab (Kalaa Utsavam 2023), won the Best Ensemble Award in The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards 2024. In 2025, Agam opened its own 110-seat black box theatre,a historic first for a Tamil theatre company, at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Officiating at the opening ceremony, Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Second Minister for Law, remarked that this was “important not just to the Tamil speaking community, but … to all Singaporeans living proudly in our multicultural society.”
