Yishun used to be a very friendly, peaceful village... Quiet and tranquil but now, Yishun has been changed into buildings and markets, busy and rushed.
It was actually very difficult at first to interview people. Mostly because we were doing this for the first time and we were shy. Also because we had a lot of rejections. We also got cruel responses and some even ignored us. Throughout the whole activity, we only managed to get a few stories.
One 61 year old woman named Chan Geok Mui, was very willing to share. She told us that she had been living in Yishun for about 25 years now. She said that there was a part of Yishun that used to be a graveyard. During that period, Yishun used to be a nice village. There were many trees to climb for the children and the villagers used to keep animals like sheep and chickens. She also complained that there were a lot of mosquitoes. She said that Yishun has changed a lot since then.
We also interviewed another citizen of the Yishun. An old man in his 60s who does not want to be named. Instead of saying that Yishun used to be a village, he said that it used to be a forest. He said that he did not really do much shopping as he has no jobs. Instead, he likes to spend his free time enjoying the view and breathe in the air of the Yishun premises and remember his sweet memories he had as a boy.
Others that we interviewed, just moved to Yishun. Though the short time they spent there, they related to us that Yishun is a very nice place to live. They mentioned the amenities and told us all their weekly lunches at each shop.
It was an amazing experience for us. We listened to amazing stories and some were not even related to Yishun. In all, we had a wonderful time today
