This photograph was the former Nanyang Girls High School located in King's Road. The photograph was taken by my aunt as she was an old school girl in the 1950s. I attended the secondary school in the early 70s. The current premises is now occupied by the Nanyang Primary School and the secondary school has been relocated to its new campus in Bukit Timah Road, next to the National Junior College. The school field in front of the school's main building brought back fond memories. I remembered whenever there was a heavy downpour, the school field would be flooded due to the poor drainage systems. Water levels could reach up to knee level in some occasions, and the whole stretch of the road would be closed. As majority of the students travelled to school by foot and some had to walk to the main road to take public transport, the school principal would occasionally allow class to be dismissed earlier in anticipation of a flood. I must confess that I longed for heavy rain during those days as there would be a possibility that the physical education lesson would be cancelled( because the school field would be muddy)or that our lessons would end earlier.
