Ash Trays, Spittoons, Swill Buckets

Recollection
I remember … Back in the 50s and 60s, although smoking was considered an unhealthy habit, it wasn’t actively targeted as a vice as it should have been like now. As such, paraphernalia that enticed people to smoke were freely marketed. An example is the attractive ash trays produced by beer companies for coffee shops and their customers to use. Thank God, I am grateful to our Government for all the anti-smoking measures to help its peoples stay healthy and breathe easy. 3 cheers for our Government! I also remember ... Spittoons that were placed under coffee shop tables for customers to use. My papa and his assistants had to wash them daily. In a way, it discourages spitting on the floor, but open spit is itself harmful to health. Later the practice was abolished. I also remember ... . Families would dispose unfinished food into swill buckets. At the end of the day, pig farmers would come round to collect the swill for their pigs. Also deemed as a harmful practice both for man and animal, the practice was also abolished. Thank God for our wise Government and its Health Ministry! Another 3 cheers!
