March 1967 Parliamentary By-election

Article

A by-election was held on 7 March 1967 to fill vacancies in parliament caused by the resignations of Barisan Sosialis (BS) members of parliament (MPs) Tan Cheng Tiong (Jalan Kayu), Poh Ber Liak (Tampines), Ong Lian Teng (Bukit Panjang), Loh Miaw Gong (Havelock) and Koo Young (Thomson).[1]

Nomination day was held on 24 February.[2] On that day, People’s Action Party (PAP) candidates Teo Hup Teck (Jalan Kayu), Chew Chin Han (Tampines), Patma Salvadurai (Bukit Panjang) and Lim Soo Peng (Havelock) were returned unopposed.[3]

PAP’s Ang Nam Piau vied for the Thomson seat against two independent candidates, M. P. D. Nair and Chan Yoke Kwong. On polling day, Ang won by a huge majority with 9,407 votes against Nair and Chan, who had garnered 1,310 and 537 votes respectively.[4] This victory marked “the first time, since Barisan Sosialis members boycotted and resigned from parliament, that 49 constituencies [were] represented in the House – all by the PAP”. The BS MPs for the remaining two seats had been missing for some time.[5]

This by-election was the last of four parliamentary by-elections held in the mid-1960s that were instrumental to the consolidation of PAP’s political position.[6]
