A by-election was held to fill vacancies in parliament caused by the resignations of three Barisan Sosialis (BS) members of parliament (MPs), S. T. Bani, Chio Cheng Thun and Kow Kee Seng.[1] The three had been the respective MPs for the Crawford, Choa Chu Kang and Paya Lebar constituencies. They had broken away from the BS out of disagreement with the party’s policies.[2]
Nomination day for the by-election was held on 1 March 1966.[3] On that day, the People’s Action Party (PAP) candidates, Tang See Chim (Choa Chu Kang), Tay Boon Too (Paya Lebar) and S. Ramaswamy (Crawford), won in walkover victories. BS had boycotted the by-elections and none of the other opposition parties fielded candidates.[4]
