Centre for Singapore Tamil Culture

Poigai Narpani Mandram is an association formed by the descendants of migrants from the village of North Poigai Nallur in Tamil Nadu. Its primary mission is to preserve their original identity in Singapore and to inculcate in the younger generation a sense of culture and roots. The organisation was established in 2014 with 11 executive committee members, led by S Thangavel. Currently, it has more than 100 members. Poigai Nallur residents began travelling to Singapore in the 18th century, on ships from the nearby port of Nagapattinam. Originating from the port area, most of these migrants were expert caulkers -- specialists in sealing boats and ships to prevent water leakage.

Consequently, the early arrivals worked as caulkers, and their skills were in high demand as colonial Singapore thrived on sea trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. The early arrivals settled in Kampong Susu near South Bridge Road. Over time, these migrants branched out into white-collar jobs and professions and started living in other parts of Singapore. Currently, approximately 70 families from Poigai Nallur reside here. The Poigai immigrants have a long association with the Sri Mariamman Temple in South Bridge Road.  The Theemithi (fire-walking) festival at this temple is said to have been initiated by them. In the early years, the temple also accorded representatives of this community prominence during special functions. The association organises community activities to bring the members together and also provides financial assistance for essential needs and natural calamities in their native village.
