The Digital Archive of Singapore Tamil Music (DASTM) was the third in the series of projects undertaken by the Tamil Digital Heritage Group (TDHG) in collaboration with the National Library Board (NLB) to digitally archive key aspects of Singapore’s Tamil culture. DASTM was launched on 10 November 2018, following similar projects in 2015 and 2017, which focused on Tamil literature and Tamil theatre, respectively.
Indian classical music, particularly Carnatic Tamil music, has been a vital component of the classical dance and music scene in Singapore for decades. Yet, there was little documentation of the long musical journey. While lagging behind dance, theatre and literary genres, Tamil music continues to be a significant part of the arts landscape in Singapore. This project brought together past records and materials pertaining to Tamil classical music in this country.
Led by professional classical singer Sushma Soma, this project was added to the archival collection as a valuable resource for budding singers and a forum for the exchange of ideas and practices in the musical world.
