A by-election was held to fill the Legislative Assembly seat vacated by Ong Eng Guan, former Minister for National Development and People’s Action Party (PAP) assemblyman for Hong Lim constituency.Ong had resigned from the Legislative Assembly in December 1960 following his suspension from duty and subsequent expulsion from the PAP earlier in the year.[1]
Nomination day for the by-election was set for 11 March 1961 with polling to take place on 29 April.[2] The by-election saw a straight fight between Ong, who stood as an independent candidate, and PAP’s Jek Yuen Thong following the disqualifications of two other candidates.[3] Ong successfully regained his seat in a landslide victory in which he polled 7,747 votes against Jek’s 2,820 votes.[4]
