The Federation of Indian Muslims (FIM) was formed in 1992, with a mission to “inspire and empower a united and knowledgeable community that overcomes challenges and aligns itself with our multiracial society.”

Traditionally, South Indian Muslims in Singapore have mostly organised themselves into kin-based associations, often identified by names reflecting their town or district of origin. Examples of such associations include the Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League and the Singapore Tenkasi Muslim Welfare Society. Currently, there are approximately 30 Indian Muslim organisations in Singapore. With the steadily increasing South Indian Muslim population, a need for broader and more inclusive representation became apparent.

In the early 1990s, prominent and active Indian and Tamil Muslim organisations recognised the necessity for a central representative body. Guided by notable figures such as Abu Bakar Maidin from Jamiyah Singapore, and members of parliament M K A Jabbar and Zainul Abidin Rasheed, six organisations were tasked to form the FIM. The six founding members  were Jameyathul Muslimien of B & C Mutlur (established 1936), Thuckalay Muslim Association (established 1939), Singapore Tenkasi Muslim Welfare Society (established 1940), Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League (established 1941), Thiruvithancode Muslim Union (established 1952) and Pasir Panjang Indian Muslim Association (established 1964, now renamed the United Indian Muslim Association).

In 2024, FIM changed its name to the Federation of Singapore Indian Muslims (FSIM). It is an institutional member of Yayasan Mendaki, entitling it to a seat on the board. Additionally, one of FSIM's nominations is allocated a seat on the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS).

Beyond organising socio-religious activities such as the observation of the Birthday of Prophet Muhammad and Ramadhan Break Fast (iftar) events, FSIM collaborates with various Malay and Indian organisations to hold joint events during the National Day Observance Ceremony and Tamil Language Festival.
