NAC’s Young Artist Award is established

Article

The National Arts Council first introduced the Young Artist Award in 1992 with the objective of encouraging the development of young artists below the age of 35 in Singapore.[1] The award is Singapore’s highest accolade for young arts practitioners who show promise of artistic excellence in the fields of dance, theatre, music, literature, photography, art and film.[2]

The annual awards are open to both Singaporeans and permanent residents 35 years old and younger, and are not conferred posthumously. The Young Artist Award has been conferred on 140 recipients between 1992 and 2015.[3]Besides receiving a trophy and a certificate, each recipient of the award is also eligible for the Young Artist Award Grant of up to S$20,000, which can be used for their arts projects or studies both locally and abroad. Awardees must apply for the grant within two years of receiving the award.[4]

The first eight artists to receive the Young Artist Award in 1992 were dancer Jamaludin Jalil, TheatreWorks artistic director Ong Keng Sen, bilingual drama director Lim Jen Erh, pianist Shane Thio, Singapore Youth Choir conductor Jennifer Tham, installation artist S. Chandrasekaran, lyricist Liang Wern Fook and photographer Lee Tiah Kee.[5] These artists were nominated by arts organisations, institutions as well as invididuals and were selected by a panel comprising 25 members such as then artistic director of The Substation, Kuo Pao Kun; then president of the former LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts, Brother Joseph McNally and then artistic director of the Singapore Dance Theatre, Goh Soo Khim.[6]

Young Artist Award nominees are assessed based on the following criteria: a clear artistic vision coupled with a strong portfolio that demonstrates their potential for continued excellence; significant and noteworthy contributions towards Singapore’s artistic development, particularly in their chosen fields as well as the potential to become a leader in that field; and the ability to be an inspiration to other artists in Singapore and overseas.[7]

In 2015, seven artists received the Young Artist Award: Chun Kai Feng, Chun Kai Qun, Diana Soh, James Tan, Loo Zihan, Kirsten Tan and Riduan Zalani.[8]
