The Serangoon Times is a Tamil monthly magazine with a primary aim of providing a platform for Singapore Tamil literature and capturing the reflections of Tamils in Singapore—hence its tagline, “Thoughts of Singapore Tamils.” The magazine was founded by M. A. Musthafa, with its first issue published in June 2010 and T. Chandrasekaran serving as its editor. However, after a few issues, the publication went into hibernation until its relaunch in August 2015. Since then, with Shanavas as Chief Editor and a team of volunteer editors, the magazine has been published regularly at $3 per issue, and has been available online since June 2021.
Its content includes short stories, poems, translated works, interviews, event coverage, book reviews, essays, history features, and research articles. Themed issues are occasionally released, focusing on topics such as short stories, poetry, travel, youth in Singapore, and translations. Several works of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry that first appeared in The Serangoon Times have since been compiled and published as standalone books. Notable examples include M. K. Kumar’s 5:12 PM (a short story collection), Mahesh Kumar’s Vannam Thedum Sorkal (an anthology of translated poems), Azhagunila’s Sirukaattuch Chunai (a compilation of essays), and Hema’s Vaazhaimara Nottu (a historical novel based on the Japanese occupation of Singapore).
The Serangoon Times published its 100th issue in June 2024, and has so far featured contributions from about 250 individuals—approximately 90 percent of whom are Singapore residents.
