November 1966 Parliamentary By-election

Article

A by-election was held to fill vacancies in parliament caused by the resignations of the People's Action Party (PAP) member of parliament (MP), Fong Kim Heng (Joo Chiat), and two Barisan Sosialis (BS) MPs, Chia Thye Poh (Jurong) and Lee Tee Tong (Bukit Timah).[1]

Nomination day was held on 2 November 1966.[2] On that day, PAP candidates, Yeoh Ghim Seng (Joo Chiat), Ho Kah Leong (Jurong) and Chor Yeok Eng (Bukit Timah), were returned unopposed.[3] The three parliamentary seats were uncontested as BS had boycotted the by-election, and the Singapore branch of the Alliance Party could not participate as the party symbol had not been endorsed by the government.[4] Approval for the symbol was subsequently given, however, according to the party's secretary-general, Lee Kim Chuan, “[by then] the time given [was] too short to find suitable candidates.”[5] Mohamed Haji Taff, chairman of the Singapore branch of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), withdrew from participating in the by-election as his application to stand as an independent candidate for Joo Chiat was rejected by his party.[6]
